History of American Eagle Silver Coins
American silver coins were first introduced in the fiscal year 1986 after the Government’s attempt to sell stockpiled silver resulted in a loss for taxpayers. The plan for the stockpiled silver was to balance the budget, but the US Federal Reserve was selling silver for undervalued prices.
To rectify the error, the Senate proposed that coins would be worth more if they were made and sold as silver bullion coins. The US Mint was given sole responsibility to manufacture the American Silver Eagle to precise specifications, security measures and design.
The first Silver American Eagle coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986 in a ceremony attended by then Secretary of the Treasury, James A. Baker III. In 1999, two other refineries, Philadelphia and West Point were invited to increase the production of American Silver Eagle coins in order to cope with the high demand.
