History of British Queen's Beasts Coins
First struck in 2016 in time to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Jubilee in 2017, the Queen’s Beasts silver coin collection is based on the 10 creatures that stood guard at her Coronation in 1953. The golden statues were originally created by James Woodford RA, and are currently on display at the Canadian Museum of History.
Each of the Queen’s Beasts supports a shield bearing the arms of a royal or noble lineage which at some point played an important role in the long history of the British monarchy. The crown has been fought over by many dynasties, and each of these is represented by one of the Queen’s Beasts.
Why buy Queen's Beasts Silver Coins?
British Sterling silver bullion coins are a proven asset that represent a safe investment and often used as a hedge against paper-based assets. Given they are also manufactured to the highest quality standards set by the Royal Mint, British silver coins are particularly valuable to any retirement portfolio.
Despite being produced by the world’s leading precious metals refinery, the Queen’s Beasts series is also a unique work of art based on British history. Their prestige and intricate designs make them appealing collectors’ items in their own right.
The Royal Mint has a worldwide reputation as the leading precious metal refinery, which adds a level of trust to the value of the material itself. The Queen’s Beasts collection is of the Mint’s highest quality, and its value is guaranteed by the Treasury of the United Kingdom.
The silver Queen’s Beasts coins are valued at £10 for a 10 oz. coin, and the unique 2 oz. coin has a face value of £5. However, the face value does not reflect the true value of silver coins. The actual price is calculated in accordance with the latest spot prices.
Design of British Queen's Beasts Silver Coins
The Queen’s Beasts silver coins are miniature versions of the original sculptures placed at Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s coronation in 1953. As such, they are stylised and exquisite versions of the original artwork.
Each of the 10 reverse designs refers to a period of British royal and noble history, and will be released at regular periods over the coming years, up to a final release in 2020. The release schedule is as follows:
- The Lion of England (March 2016)
- The Griffin of Edward III (November 2016)
- The Red Dragon of Wales (March 2017)
- The Unicorn of Scotland (September 2017)
- The Black Bull of Clarence (March 2018)
- The Falcon of the Plantagenets (September 2018)
- The Yale of Beaufort (September 2018)
- The White Lion of Mortimer (September 2019)
- The White Horse of Hannover (March 2020)
- The White Greyhound of Richmond (September 2020)
The obverse of the series has Her Majesty’s sitting in the right facing pose created by the Royal Mint’s official artist, Jody Clark made in 2013. This is the fifth and most recent depiction of Queen Elizabeth II, recognising the length of her reign at the time of her Sapphire Jubilee – 45 years in 2017.
