About Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins
The Canadian Maple Leaf silver collection is an elegant series of coins designed and produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Released every year, the Silver Maple leaf is a consistently popular investment thanks to its 99.99% pure silver content and historical significance. Regarded as one of the most beautifully designed coins on the bullion market, its value as both a collector’s item and an investment vehicle makes the Canadian Maple Leaf silver coin a prized asset.
History of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
First minted in 1988, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin set new standards in the manufacturing of silver bullion. The Royal Canadian Mint was the first refinery to increase the purity of silver coins and, in doing so, enhanced its reputation as a leader of precious metal products.
The maple leaf designed by Walter Ott for the release of the gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins in 1979 was chosen for the silver coins as well. Although the famous maple leaf is a permanent fixture in the design of the silver collection, there are some annual variations on the privy mark including numerous special editions.
Since 1988, there have been three versions of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait on the obverse of the coin. In its first two editions, the portrait was realized by Arnold Machin. Between 1990 and 2003, Her Majesty’s profile was designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. Since 2004, the coin has carried an obverse portrait designed by Susanna Blunt.
As these artists represent different periods in the Royal Canadian Mint’s long history, editions of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf differ in value accordingly. Certain editions with a portrait by one artist may be limited, making them particularly valuable.
Why Buy Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coins?
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is one of the most revered producers of bullion products in the world. Following in the footsteps of the South African Krugerrand, the RCM was the first precious metals refinery to manufacture collectible coins as an investment vehicle.
The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf represents an excellent investment opportunity. Its value as a precious metal is guaranteed by the Canadian Government and because annual supplies are limited, silver coins carry a numismatic price dedicated coin collectors are willing to pay. And the RCM’s world standard of precision engineering and assaying services ensures that its silver coin collections will retain the highest value.
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins therefore have a high liquidity. As bullion coin collections like the Canadian Maple Leaf can be easily valued and converted, they are assets to any portfolio. The coin is eligible for inclusion in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) due to its qualifying silver fineness.
Design of Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins
Since its inception in 1988, the Canadian Maple Leaf series has undergone some special design changes. As well as the three versions of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait on the obverse, the reverse has displayed some excellent examples of the RCM’s expertise.
There have been commemorative editions. The 10th anniversary 10-ounce single issue which failed commercially is a rare and highly sought after edition. Successful designs include the firework privy mark in 1999, and the two zodiac editions from 1998-2009 and 2012 onwards which ends in 2023.
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Silver Coins: IRA Investment
Silver Maple Leaf coins are manufactured to the highest quality and contain a 99.99% silver fineness which makes these precious metal coins eligible for an IRA investment portfolio in accordance with the Tax Payer Relief Act of 1997.
The Royal Canadian Mint has shown with its Maple Leaf coin collection that these bullion coins are an excellent investment opportunity and represent a store of wealth that promise to increase your spending power once you retire.
Silver is also a proven asset that helps to hedge against paper-based investments. When the economy takes a downturn and fiat currencies drop in value, silver and other precious metals increase in price. Subsequently, smart investors choose precious metals for their retirement portfolio and silver Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins are a perfect choice.
