About Saint Helena Lucky Angel Silver Coins
This collection of stunning silver coins is an homage to the legend of the Angel coin, carried as a token of good luck by sailors, pilots and warriors for centuries. Re-designed for the 21st century, the coin is directly inspired by the Lucky Angel coin carried by Napoleon.
History of Lucky Angel Saint Helena Silver Coins
In 1792, King Louis XVI commissioned Augustine Dupre to design a new French coinage and Dupre presented a design featuring an angel on a pedestal. While the design proved popular, Dupre soon fell under suspicion of harboring revolutionary ideas and was sentenced to execution. On the scheduled day of his death, Dupre managed to escape the guillotine, reportedly by bribing the guards with one of his Angel Coins.
The story spread like wildfire and the Angel Coin quickly gained a reputation as a 'lucky' coin. In the 19th Century, navy captains would not leave port without an Angel in their purses. Napoleon Bonaparte himself is believed to have carried one everywhere, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo. The legend even continued deep into the 20th Century, with pilots fighting in Vietnam and Iraq flying with a 'lucky' Angel in their cockpits.
The East India Company and the Issuing Authority of St. Helena pay homage to this rich history with the Lucky Angel Silver Coin.

Design of Silver Saint Helena Lucky Angel Coins
Conceived by renowned artist and sculptor Chiara Principe, the silver Lucky Angel collection features an exquisite design inspired by its long history.
The reverse of the 2023 mintage features a beautiful angel on top of the world carrying a laurel wreath and a pole. Around the rim is the word ANGEL, two bees, palm branches, and the East India Company mint mark. On the updated 2024 version, the Angel sits and faces the heavens and the palm branches are replaced by intricate, sprawling wings.
The obverse of the 2023 coin bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the issuing country Saint Helena, the denomination, the weight, silver fineness, and the date 2023. King Charles III replaces the late Elizabeth on the 2024 mintage.
